Foundation Receives $30K Commitment from Lamb Family for Technical Center

Published on June 3, 2024

The Ozarka College Foundation received a $30,000 commitment for the Mountain View Technical Center (MVTC) from Fred and Janet Lamb in memory of Janet's father, Ruel Richardson, of Mountain View. The contribution will support renovation and equipment for an advanced technology classroom at the MVTC and will be named for the late Richardson. The space will offer a 21st Century learning experience, access to the latest digital classroom technologies and an appropriate complement to the advanced laboratory experiences received throughout the Center.

Ruel Richardson was the Agriculture Teacher for Mountain View High School from 1952 to 1974. Richardson was an early advocate and strong supporter for his students pursuing training in skilled trades.  Ruel was a pioneer in offering welding training for local farmers and even making "cow calls " to assist with veterinary care for their livestock. Ruel was also the local advocate for fellow veterans, offering a farmer training program to help with their farms.

"Dad loved teaching his students and fellow community members hands-on skills that they would use for a lifetime, " said Janet and her brother John Richardson in a joint statement. "We are honored to recognize our Dad in this way and know how proud Dad would be to know local students would get opportunities to pursue training at this technical center. "

"This contribution from Fred and Janet will have a significant impact on Ozarka students for years to come, " said Dr. Josh Wilson, vice president of Ozarka Advancement. "We are grateful for their generosity and what a fitting way to remember Mr. Richardson who promoted skilled trades in his classroom so long ago. "

The Mountain View Technical Center will open for the Fall 2024 semester and will offer technical certificates in Skilled Trades and Welding Technology. Driven by community and local industry needs, the new Skilled Trades certificate will focus on electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and construction training in preparation for high demand careers and seamless transition to apprenticeship and journeyman opportunities.

Born in 1918, Ruel Richardson was a lifelong resident of Stone County, Arkansas.   Ruel graduated from Mountain View High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a "scout, " or sniper, and was wounded by artillery fire for which he received a Purple Heart.

"One of the things about Dad that we are most proud, " continued Janet and John, "was that after we learned what all he experienced and overcame from the War, he still came home and raised a family, completed a career, and served his community well. "

After serving in the U.S. Army, Ruel completed his degree in agricultural education from Arkansas State University and began teaching school in Grubbs, Arkansas before returning home to begin what became a 22-year career with Mountain View School District where he was insistent on preparing students for in-demand careers in the skilled trades.
