Ozarka College Awarded Blue&You Grant

Published on January 22, 2018

Ozarka College has been awarded The Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas grant, which will help fund a Community Obesity Prevention Fitness and Nutrition Program. Alison Morrison from Arkansas BlueCross BlueShield recently visited the Ozarka College Paul Miller Fitness Center and presented a check to the College in the amount of $49,334. This award is to provide resources for cardio health and nutrition programs to community members and Ozarka employees.

With these funds, Ozarka purchased a variety of new cardio equipment for the fitness center and will be offering incentives for community members to join, including a prize drawing! The College is also conducting a Walking Challenge to collectively walk 15,000 miles this year. For more information about joining the fitness center or participating in the walking challenge, please contact Fitness Center Director, Stacy Gore, at 870.368.2090 or email: stacy.gore@ozarka.edu.

In addition to the fitness center upgrades, Ozarka College has partnered with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service to provide nutrition programs and health programs in Fulton, Izard, Sharp and Stone counties. The first program is designed to help participants focus on health, not weight. "ReNew You: Health for Every Body " is built around the principles of pleasurable and mindful eating, physically active living, and respect for body-size diversity. The ReNew You non-diet approach is designed to move people away from diets and excessive exercise, to a gentler approach with active living in a healthy body. The primary goal is to help participants gain new attitudes and learn new information and skills to live a life focused on health.

Extension service agents will lead the six-week ReNew You program at Ozarka College in Melbourne, Ash Flat, Mammoth Spring, and Mountain View on February 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8, and 15. The program is free to attend and will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch! For more information or to register, please contact your local County Extension Office.
